Brief Notes from 4-4-08

- Jose Contreras still stinks, but the White Sox offense bailed him out. 5 IP, 4 ER, 10 H, and 4 BB.
- Curtis Granderson’s fill-in, Clete Thomas was 3-4 with a SB and has 5 hits in his first 9 AB’s.
- A.J. Pierzynski had 5 RBI and has 7 through 4 games.
- Salomon Torres got a save, but only because he pitched the final three innings of the Brewers’ win. He gave up a 2 run homer and is not rosterable.
- 3B Bill Hall had 2 HR and 6 RBI.
- J.R. Towles hit his first HR of the season.
- Micah Owings dominated the Rockies’ offense striking out 9 in 6 2/3 innings. The Rockies managed only 2 hits for the game.
- Keep an eye on Justin Upton who hit his second HR of the year.
- Matt Holliday has 6 K’s and one hit in his first 14 AB’s.
- George Sherrill picked up his second save for the O’s.
- Ian Kennedy was rocked by the Rays in 2.1 IP, giving up 4 H, 6ER, and 4 BB.
- LaTroy Hawkins was worse, surrendering 2 HR and 6 ER in 2/3 of an inning.
- Carl Crawford had his 3rd SB and OF Nathan Haynes his second.
- Chase Utley hit 2 HR and has 3 on the year.
- Jason Bay was 0-4 with 3 K’s. Ryan Doumit continued his torrid start with a HR and has 8 hits in 15 AB’s.
- Jose Bautista had a rough day going 0-3, getting picked off second base, and had a throwing error.
- The Marlins threw out 2 Pirates attempting to stretch singles into doubles.
- Alex Rios and Marco Scutaro both had their third SB of the year.
- Shaun Marcum had 8 K’s in 7 IP and 3 ER in getting the W against the Red Sox.
- Carlos Gomez is showing his value with 2 more steals giving him 4 already this season. He also went 3-4.
- Scott Baker was effective enough to get the W, but only had 2 K’s in 6 2/3 IP.
- Mark Grudzielanek has 8 hits in his first 16 AB’s.
- Watch Braden Looper if you need an extra starter. (6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER)
- Travis Buck update: 0-18 and 9 K’s.
- Justin Duchscherer’s transition from reliever to starter got off to a good start (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K’s) He may end up being more valuable as the A’s increase his pitch count. He threw just 72 pitches yesterday.
- Another game, another home run allowed by Huston Street, who sits with a 12.27 ERA and 3 HR’s given up in 3.2 IP.
- Hiroki Kuroda dominated the Padres in 7 strong innings, allowing just 3 hits.
- Chad Billingsley came out of the bullpen again and pitched 2 innings.
- Justin Germano gave up 0 ER in 6 innings against the Dodgers and came out with no decision.
- Chone Figgins was on base five times and didn’t steal a base.
