Brief Notes from 4-6-08

-Chien-Ming Wang struck out an uncharacteristic 6 batters, allowing just 4 hits and no runs in 6 innings picking up his second win.

-Hideki Matsui homered for the second time in three games.

-Josh Beckett pitched for the first time and it was forgettable (4.2 IP, 3 H, 5 ER, 4 BB) he did have 6 K’s so he contributed something for his owners.

-The Blue Jays’ 6-9 hitters (Overbay, Scutaro, Barajas, and McDonald) were 0-15 with 11 K’s against Red Sox pitching.

-Ian Snell struck out 10 in 6 innings and Xavier Nady hit his third homer of the year in the Pirates 9-2 win over the Marlins.

-Edinson Volquez of the Reds had a terrific first start for his new team (5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K’s) The Reds staff has tremendous K potential with Harang, Cueto, and Volquez.

-Notorious slow starter Pat Burrell is hitting .421 with 6 RBI in the Phillies’ first 6 games.

-Jeff Keppinger now has 10 hits in his first 23 at bats, five of them for extra bases.

-Johan Santana was having lack of run support flashbacks as he gave up just one run in 7 IP and took the loss against the Braves. John Smoltz was phenomenal in his debut going 5 innings and allowing just 2 hits while striking out 6 for the W.

-Felix Hernandez has yet to allow an ER in 15 IP this season.

-Mark Lowe blew his first save opportunity for the Mariners not even retiring one Oriole batter.

-Ben Sheets completely dominated the Giants’ offense, pitching a complete game shutout with 8 K’s.

-FYI: Gabe Kapler is on the Brewers and has homered in consecutive games. He is a solid option when he is starting against left handers.

-Royal SS Tony Pena is 1-18 with one RBI.

-Joakim Soria is rising up the closer ranks, he has 3 saves and 7 K’s in 4.0 IP. He struck out the side on 12 pitches.

-Albert Pujols is getting on base a lot, but he has more SB (1) than HR and one RBI.

-Alfonso Soriano hit his first HR and threw out Michael Bourn at the plate.

-Kerry Wood has solidified his closer job saving his third straight game.

-Brandon Lyon blew his second save as Chad Qualls came in and got the save.

-Chris B. Young has gone 23 AB’s and still doesn’t have a single. 3 of his five hits have been homeruns.

-Colorado’s bullpen gave up 2 runs in the 9th inning and 3 in the 10th.

-Gerald Laird had 2 homers and 6 RBI, his first of the year.

-Rangers’ OF David Murphy had his second steal.

-Travis Buck is still hitless at 0-21 and 9 K’s.

-Cliff Lee had a great start vs. Oakland (6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K’s), but you may want to see him pitch against a good offense before getting too excited.

-Andre Ethier hit his first HR and stole his first base.

-Trevor Hoffman owners may be getting a little nervous. He had a 4.13 ERA in the second half last year and has given up 5 ER and is 0-2 already this season.

-Justin Verlander was not on his game against the White Sox (5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB and a hit batter)

-White Sox pitchers Mark Buehrle and Mike MacDougal got Tigers’ batters to hit into five double plays.
