The Marlins currently have a 3B/DH prospect at their Triple-A affiliate named Dallas McPherson, and he is absolutely mashing the ball. His line is .309/.420/.695, which easily puts him in the top 3 in terms of production for Triple-A players. However his leap to the majors is currently blocked by Jorge Cantu, the Marlins 3rd-baseman.
Dallas McPherson was the 2nd round selection of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (LAAA) in 2001. He was optioned to A+ ball after he was signed, and posted a ridiculous 1.488 OPS. The Angels elected to have Dallas skip AA-ball and placed him on their AAA roster. Instead of struggling at the Triple-A level, McPherson again destroyed the pitching with a 1.053 OPS. He was even brought to the majors in 2005 and did respectable, posting a .744 OPS, still the Angles wanted him to develop more and sent him down to Triple-A to start 2006. In 2006 Dallas became one of those "Quadruple-A" players; he was too good for the minors, but could never get it fully together in the majors either.
In the year 2007 when McPherson required back surgery, the Angels patience with him vanished. They opted to let him become a free agent instead of signing him, and signed he was by the Marlins. At 27 years old, McPherson will probably given only one more shot to make it in the bigs. Its likely he might not get that chance with the Marlins, but teams like the Twins and the A's both could be looking to acquire a cheap bat.
I feel Dallas McPherson is finally ready to handle big-league pitching, and given the chance he will produce. He is strictly a power hitter, do not expect any stolen bases or a particularly high average from McPherson, but home runs will come aplenty from this third-baseman. While McPherson currently will remain in the minors, keep an ear up for any trade involving Dallas McPherson to a team with an open third-base position or even any AL team with a weak DH. He could provide that boost your team needs to propel itself into the playoffs and eventually win the championship. Dallas McPherson everybody.
On an unrelated note, I will be away for the next 21 days with very limited Internet access. This will probably be the last you'll hear from me until mid-July. So enjoy the summer and keep following your fantasy teams until then.
